Presently, there are 22 million people in this region living with the disease. Deaths from AIDS have greatly affectd the family structure, forcing mothers to become single parents and children to depend on one another for survival. In Sub-Saharan Africa alone there are 11 million orphans left behind by parents who have died from the disease. SIM aims to undermine this sickness and stop the spread of HIV/AIDS through home-based care, prevention training, orphan care, evangelism, income-generating activities, and the provision of anti-retroviral drugs.
