Apply Now

SIM USA has multiple ministry opportunities, many of which can either be for short or long term. Your anticipated length of service will determine which application and process is appropriate for you, but in each case the starting point is the same. Here’s what to expect when you click GET STARTED NOW:

Preliminary Information Form (PIF)

The PIF gathers basic information, including the story of how you began following Jesus and how He led you to explore serving cross-culturally.

  • Your login allows you to return to the PIF if you are interrupted.
  • Once the login is created, you’ll have ten days to complete the PIF.
  • It usually takes 20-30 minutes.
  • Only one PIF needs to be created per family.
  • If you’re married, a spouse section will be included automatically.
  • There’s a free text box at the end of the PIF for your questions or comments.
  • Your info will be pre-filled into the application, so you won’t have to enter it again.
  • Unless there are follow-up questions, a formal application can usually be sent to you within two or three business days.

Formal Application

The formal application is straightforward and typically takes an hour or longer to complete. Its depth is determined by your anticipated length of service. If you’re married each spouse completes an application, unless one individual is planning to serve less than a month. We’ll ask for references; educational background; work, ministry and cross-cultural experience; and some questions about your faith and practice.

Medical History Form

We will send you a medical history form after receiving your application. Your information will be handled in accordance with HIPA laws. It will be reviewed by the SIM medical department, clearing you for continuation in the process or recommending that you not continue toward an overseas ministry assignment.

Reference Check

Following the preliminary medical clearance, we will send a reference form to the names you supplied. At least one of these needs to be a spiritual leader who knows you well – your pastor, an elder, Sunday School teacher or small group leader. The other references could be Christian or non-Christian friends, employers, former employers, employees, etc.

Telephone Interview

Normally, someone from the SIM USA Selection and Training Department will call you for an informal talk. You’ll be able to ask your questions as well as answer ours. Together we’ll brainstorm placement ideas and identify a possible timeline for getting to the field. You are always welcome to call anytime in the process. All long-term applicants receive a call from the Long Term Candidate Coordinator.

Split Tracks

The preceding steps are the same regardless of your anticipated length of service. From this point on, the timeline and process is very different. Click here for Team, 1-9 Month Short Term, 9-24 Months and Longer, 2 years and longer missionary service.

The Selection and Training department of SIM USA is here to glorify God by assisting you in the application, placement, and orientation process. At the same time, we are praying for our field missionaries and asking God to provide great teammates for them.

We welcome your calls and emails!
