After ten years on the faculty of Moody Bible Institute, Rick and Carol Calenberg joined SIM International and in 1984 they arrived in the West African country of Nigeria. Rick served on the faculty of the Jos ECWA (Evangelical Church of West Africa) Theological Seminary (JETS) in Jos, Nigeria. While ministering at JETS, Rick was involved in outreach with students and started a basketball evangelistic ministry. For two years he served as Chaplain of Hillcrest School (a mission and international school) and helped to start the International Church of Jos. Along with caring for a young family, Carol served in various part-time ministries including discipling women JETS students and international women, serving as a Discussion Group Leader in the first Bible Study Fellowship in Nigeria, singing and helping in mission administration.
After seven years in Nigeria, the Calenbergs returned to the Chicago area where Rick served on the faculty of Moody Bible Institute Graduate School as Professor of Bible and Missions until December, 1996. The Calenbergs returned to Nigeria in 1997 and Rick served for two and a half years as Acting SIM Nigeria Director and Carol worked in mission administration as well. They both served as adjunct faculty members at JETS.
In addition to their service with SIM in Nigeria, the Calenbergs have ministered as short term missionaries to Mexico with CAM International and in Romania with the Evangelical Free Church. Rick has also ministered to short term Operation Mobilization missionaries in India, Nepal and Pakistan.
During the 2000-2001 school term, Rick served as the first Missionary in Residence at Multnomah Bible College in Portland, Oregon and continues to serve as an adjunct faculty member. Currently, the Calenbergs are serving as Northwest Regional Director for SIM USA and are living in Portland. Their assignment includes recruiting new missionaries, servicing missionaries when they are home from the field, helping develop strategic partnerships with churches and networking with other mission directors.
The Calenbergs have four grown daughters, two of whom are married and one granddaughter. Their youngest daughter is a senior at Multnomah Bible College.
